A Refresher On Wearing Sterile Disposable Gloves

Disposable gloves help to prevent infection in the patient and the provider of healthcare, but it’s important to follow the rules on when and how to wear them.

While you could buy any box of gloves from your local pound or discount store, those types of gloves are meant more for cleaning or doing repairs around the home.

If you work in a hospital, clinic, care home, or other medical setting, then you should be wearing sterile disposable gloves.

Prepping to Put Sterile Gloves on Hands

Sterile disposable gloves will prevent you from transferring harmful microorganisms to your patient, while they will also protect you from picking up germs from your patient. They should only be worn once, then safely disposed of.

While it can be tempting to leave on your wedding rings as a symbol of the permanency of your relationship, you’re going to have to remove them from your hands.

That also includes any bracelets or watches. Artificial nails shouldn’t be worn, nails should be kept trimmed, and nail polish should not be worn.

If you have any cuts or scrapes on your hands or fingers, cover them first with a plaster. If you are wearing long sleeves, roll them up above your elbows.

Washing Your Hands

Before putting on a pair of disposable sterile surgical gloves you’ll need to wash them with a surgical hand scrub.

This is also applicable to removing the gloves after a surgery, or after you have helped your current patient. If the package of sterile surgical gloves is not yet open, be sure to wash your hands first, then place the box down on a recently sanitized service.

Peel open the package while carefully avoiding touching any of the contents.

Placing the Gloves On Your Hands

Carefully remove one glove from the box. Only touch the cuff of the disposable sterile surgical gloves. Slide it onto your fingers and pull it up to your wrist. Do the same for the other glove for the other hand.

Keep Your Gloves Clean

It can be tricky not to touch items around the room, because that’s what we do naturally. To hold your focus, hold your gloved hands together and about waist level until you must handle surgical instruments or other medical equipment.

How to Remove Gloves

Once you’re done with a procedure or the patient is ready to go, carefully grab the other glove near the wrist and pull the glove off. Using your other hand, grasp the glove near the wrist and do the same.

Dispose of the gloves in the proper garbage bin, then wash your hands and prepare for the next patient.

You can find disposable surgical gloves here on our medical sutures website. We have more than surgical supplies, we have everything you need for your hospital, clinic, or care home.

It is possible to prevent infection in your patients when you follow all the proper procedures, and they’ll be certain to appreciate your efforts to treat their medical condition effectively!
