Learn about PROLENE® sutures, including material composition, handling characteristics, common applications and long-term wound support properties.
PROLENE® is a synthetic non-absorbable monofilament suture manufactured from polypropylene. It is widely used in procedures where long-term wound support is required and is particularly popular in vascular, cardiovascular, plastic and general surgery.
The monofilament structure provides smooth tissue passage with low tissue drag and minimal tissue reactivity. Because PROLENE® is non-absorbable, it retains strength over time and is commonly selected where permanent wound support may be beneficial.
Depending on the procedure, clinicians may consider ETHILON® for skin closure, PDS II® for extended absorbable wound support or MONOCRYL® for absorbable cosmetic closure. The most suitable alternative will depend on the required wound support and absorption characteristics.
