Learn about VICRYL® sutures, including material composition, absorption characteristics, common surgical applications and alternative absorbable suture options.
VICRYL® is a synthetic braided absorbable suture manufactured from polyglactin 910. It is one of the most widely used absorbable suture materials and is commonly selected for soft tissue approximation and ligation.
The braided construction provides excellent handling characteristics and knot security, making VICRYL® a popular choice across multiple surgical specialties including general surgery, obstetrics, gynaecology, dental surgery and veterinary procedures.
Depending on wound support requirements and clinician preference, alternatives may include MONOCRYL® for monofilament absorbable closure, PDS II® for longer-term support, or VICRYL RAPIDE® where faster absorption is desirable.
